2019, room-scale VR, binaural sound
2018, 13:31, video projection, 16:9 aspect ratio
Created in direct response to Jensen and Jóhannsson’s composition. A repeating chord loop is elongated with each successive iteration. In sync, the user progresses through a repeating set of chasms and thresholds. The chord loop elongates with each iteration while the pitch remains constant. The overall effect is a feeling of stasis, as if the architecture is moving through the user as opposed to the user moving through the architecture.
Although the movement is predominantly forward, throughout the piece's duration the view slowly tilts backward, ultimately reaching 90 degrees. This intensifies the stasis effect by gently forcing the user to lay down horizontally. This also allows the user to focus on the peripheral architecture and natural phenomena that would otherwise be missed by an exclusively forward progression.
The piece was originally created for live video projection for the FOR THIS FROM THAT WILL BE FILLED performance at The Kitchen. It toured extensively with Clarice Jensen in 2018-19 appearing at Big Ears Festival (Knoxville), Ambient Church (New York), and Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (Athens) among others.
It was also developed as a virtual reality experience. Featuring minimal interactivity but immersing the user in the environment and soundscape.
